What is PrEP?
Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is an anti-HIV medication that keeps HIV negative people from becoming infected. PrEP is approved by the FDA and is proven to be safe and effective. A single pill, taken once daily, is highly effective against HIV when taken regularly. This pill has been shown to reduce the risk of HIV infection in people who are at high risk by more than 90%. The medication blocks the virus from copying itself and prevents it from establishing an infection.
- Its effectiveness is even higher if it is combined with other ways to prevent new HIV infections like condom use.
- In addition to taking a daily medication, PrEP also involves regular visits to the health care provider at the OCHD STD Center.
- It’s important to note that this medication is much less effective if it is not taken consistently.
- Also, taking PrEP will not prevent other STDs such as syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia.
Who is it for?
PrEP is not for everyone. It is for people who are HIV-negative and at high risk for HIV infection. This includes anyone who:
- injects drugs and shares needles
- has sex with an HIV positive partner
- has multiple sex partners
Risks are generally determined by clinic staff using CDC guidelines.
Where can I get it?
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, The STD Center is currently only offering PrEP to existing clients, using telehealth. New patients who are interested in initiating PrEP are encouraged to call us at 315.435.3236 to learn more, and to get help identifying a local provider who can begin seeing you when you are ready.

The OCHD STD Center is committed to Governor Cuomo’s three-point plan to end the AIDS epidemic in New York State.
