Sewer Consolidation is a strategic initiative by the Department of Water Environment Protection (WEP) to enhance the efficiency and reliability of wastewater management services across Onondaga County. By consolidating sewer districts and systems, we aim to provide uniform service quality, reduce operational costs, and improve infrastructure management for our community. Sewer consolidation offers numerous advantages, making it a strategic choice for improving Onondaga County’s wastewater management system.

Improved Services
By centralizing the management and operations of the sewer system, WEP can streamline processes and speed up response times for maintenance and emergencies, ensuring issues are addressed promptly and effectively. With centralized control, resources can be quickly mobilized and deployed where they are needed the most. |

Cost Savings
By reducing redundant administrative and operational costs, consolidation allows for a more efficient use of resources. In addition, shared services often result in lower expenses for infrastructure maintenance, upgrades, and day-to-day operations. Consolidation also allows the County to leverage funding sources and grants, lessening the financial impacts to taxpayers. |

Enhanced Infrastructure Management
Unified planning and investment enable WEP to complete more comprehensive and coordinated upgrades and repairs. The results are a more robust and reliable sewer system that can better handle current and future demands. Upgraded infrastructure also leads to improved wastewater treatment processes. This helps protect local waterways and ecosystems from pollution, contributing to a healthier environment and compliance with environmental regulations. |

Community Benefits
Reliable and efficient sewer services are essential for Onondaga County’s quality of life and economic development. Improved infrastructure attracts businesses and supports growth, contributing to a vibrant and thriving community. Consolidation ensures that all areas within the unified district adhere to regulations and standards, and that every community receives the same high level of service quality and environmental protection. |
