The Onondaga County Health Department has successfully applied for aquatic permits issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to chemically treat 90 acres of water chestnut infestation in the following areas:
i) Thirty-two (32) acres along the west shore located south of buoy 399 near Jack’s Reef downstream to the vicinity of buoy 375 (Towns of Lysander and Van Buren) [MAP]
ii) Thirty-two (32) acres west of Dead Creek including the south side of Maloney Island eastward to the Route 690 overpass and downstream to the vicinity of buoy 335 (Town of Van Buren). From west of buoy 346 on the north side of Maloney Island to the Route 690 overpass (Towns of Lysander and Van Buren) [MAP]
iii) Eight (8) acres in the vicinity of buoy 296 to downstream to the vicinity of buoy 287. (Towns of Lysander and Geddes) [MAP]
iv) Twelve (12) acres from the vicinity of buoy 266 downstream to the vicinity of buoy 260, upstream of the Wetzel Road Treatment Plant (Town of Lysander) [MAP]
v) Six (6) acres approximately 0.4 miles north of the Route 31 bridge in the vicinity of buoy 230 to the vicinity of buoy 232 A (Town of Lysander) [MAP]
Development of the permit applications was coordinated with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Water chestnut is a highly aggressive non-native aquatic plant that has become widespread in the Three Rivers system of Central New York. Clearcast, an imazamox product manufactured by SePRO Corporation will be used at all of the locations and will be topically applied by a licensed chemical applicator. The product USEPA registration number for Clearcast is 241-437-67690. Treatments targeting only water chestnut plants will be scheduled and announced in advance of application.
