Surface water affected by blue-green algae are called harmful algal blooms (HABs) and can have a paint-like, pea soup appearance. Blue-green algae produces toxins. People and pets can be exposed through contact (touching, swallowing, and inhaling) during water recreation, drinking water, and household use. Always avoid HABs.
