Conventions and Tourism
Onondaga County has recognized the economic importance of conventions and tourism as a net wealth generator for the community. The County was the driving force behind the development of the Oncenter Complex, an integrated convention center complex that includes a 207,000 square foot convention hall, a 6,200-seat arena, performing arts theaters within the Civic Center office building/performing arts center, and a 1,000-car parking garage. The Onondaga County Convention Center/War Memorial Complex Management Corporation manages the $75 million complex, financed by the State of New York, the County, and the City of Syracuse.
The versatility of the Convention Center and entire multiple facility complex has led to the attraction of nearly 10 million visitors and a full range of state, regional and national conventions since the center opened in 1993. Major conventions and gatherings have ranged from the Manifest Missions, to the New York State Boards Association, to the World Wrestling Federation Professional Wrestling. In 1999, Syracuse hosted the largest convention in the country when the American Bowling Congress turned the Oncenter into a 48-lane bowling alley for the National ABC Tournament and Convention. The event attracted over 50,000 participants to Syracuse during a six-month period and generated an economic impact of over $60 million. In 2008, the center hosted 27 trade shows and 22 conventions.
