Risk Factors for Childhood Lead Poisoning

Exposure to lead during childhood can be detrimental to children’s physical and cognitive development. Fortunately, lead poisoning is entirely preventable. Children may be exposed to lead through a variety of sources, however, children are most often exposed to lead in their environment. Children in poverty who live in housing built before 1978 (when lead-based paints were banned in the U.S.) are at the greatest risk of lead exposure due to chipping or peeling lead-based paint in their homes.

Below are maps detailing the prevalence of older homes in Syracuse Census Tracts as well as the distribution of children (under 18 years old) living in poverty by Census Tract across Syracuse.

For additional information on lead risk factors in the City of Syracuse, see here. For resources about addressing lead hazards in the home, please review these webpages for homeowners and renters.
