Community Education & Partners

Educational programs in death investigation and forensic pathology are provided to law enforcement, health and social services agencies, medical students, pathology residents and other community agencies. The OCMEO provides internship opportunities for college-level students interested in forensic pathology, forensic toxicology, medicolegal death investigation, and medicine. Medical examiners play a critical role in educating postgraduate pathology residents, medical students, and other health care providers regarding autopsy and forensic pathology. The OCMEO is also an integral part of the Forensic and National Security Sciences Institute at Syracuse University.

The OCMEO has an active role in educating the community at large and also participates in ongoing continuing education to remain current in the scientific field. OCMEO staff actively participates in the Onondaga County Child Fatality Review Team which plays a critical public health role in identifying, reviewing, and preventing infant and childhood deaths. Medical examiners and forensic investigators present forensic pathology and investigative topics at the local, regional and national levels each year:
