Damage assessment is a systematic gathering of information that provides a picture of the impact
of an emergency/disaster. Initial damage assessments will immediately focus on life safety of
residents, damage
to critical infrastructure and the severity and breadth of property damage.
The Onondaga County Department of Emergency Management coordinates the damage assessment
process. Initial damage assessments are conducted immediately following an incident with a
focus on life safety.
Initial assessments may be otained from emergency first responders, E-911,
DOT & DPW crews, code enforcement officers, and social media posts.
Damage assessments including restoration cost projections are required by FEMA prior to opening
public assistance (PA) for municipal infrastructure recovery or individual assistance (IA) small business
and home-owner support. |
