Onondaga County Energy Performance Projects As of March 14, 2007
On June 6, 2003, County Executive Nicholas J. Pirro announced the beginning of the Energy Performance program, an initiative aimed at reducing the County's energy costs in support of the nation's goal to reduce dependence on foreign sources of energy. The county contracted with the Carrier Commercial Service Organization and Robson Woese Inc. Consulting Engineers to reduce the County's energy use by millions of dollars through conservation measures at twenty-five facilities owned and operated by the County.
Currently, the Carrier Project has four major components:
Lighting Project: Thirteen County facilities have been retrofitted with brighter and more energy efficient lighting.
Motors Project: Many motors and drives have been replaced with highly efficient equipment at ten County facilities.
Civic Center, District Heating and Cooling Plant, and War Memorial Projects: The Civic Center will receive air-to-air economizers to reduce the need for chillers during winter months. At the District Heating and Cooling Plant thirty-two year old chillers will be replaced with the most recent energy efficient equipment. Also included in the project are the switch of primary energy source from natural gas to electricity and the enabling of the County to adjust fuel sources in accordance with energy prices. The War Memorial will see upgrades in the ice rink compressor, brine system motor and pump, and heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) controls system. A new low emissivity ceiling will also be installed in the arena. All three projects are scheduled to be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2007.
HVAC Improvements Project: Includes miscellaneous HVAC projects at the 911 Center, Center for Forensic Sciences, Downtown Tunnels, Jamesville Correctional, Onondaga Community College, Alliance Bank Stadium, Water Environment Protection - Baldwinsville/Brewerton/Meadowbrook, and the Rosamond Gifford Zoo. Planning is currently underway to reduce energy consumption at each of the listed locations.
