Thank you for bagging your leaves

. . . and for promoting improved water quality in Onondaga Lake.

Onondaga County distributed 35,000 bags to City residents this fall
in an effort to keep leaves out of the sewers and streets.
Bagged and piled leaves this fall on Buckingham Avenue

Leaves have a direct impact on pollution in Onondaga Lake because they:

  • Disrupt treatment plant processes
  • Clog storm drains and pollution control equipment
  • Take up space in sewers and cause discharges of untreated sewage and storm water into streams that flow into Onondaga Lake.

—— Plus, leaves in the street can be a safety and traffic hazard. ——

Follow these easy steps:

  • Collect leaves and place in paper bags for disposal.
  • Keep leaves separate from other yard waste or garbage.
  • Place bags or leaf piles between curb and sidewalk for pickup.
  • Never put leaves in the street or in plastic bags.

Press release: FREE leaf bags—with County Executive Pirro and Mayor Driscoll.
