Sewer separation: West Street and Water Street

West Street

In 1999, sewers in West Street near West Genesee Street were successfully separated. The surrounding area was restored—even improved in appearance. Most important for water quality, three combined sewer overflows to Onondaga Creek were eliminated.

Water Street

In 2000-2001, the City of Syracuse undertook major improvements to refurbish Clinton Square, a popular festival and gathering point in downtown Syracuse. WEP separated one of two previously combined lines (CSO basin 024).

The pipe was relined and now transports wastewater only. The new sewer main is used for storm water only. This project eliminated one overflow point.
