Upgrading conveyance and treatment on the north side

Hiawatha regional treatment facility—began operation July 2001
Hiawatha regional treatment facility—began operation July 2001

Wastewater collection and treatment for the north side of Syracuse was significantly improved with construction of a small treatment facility on Hiawatha Boulevard. The Hiawatha Regional Treatment Facility (RTF) was a cooperative effort between The Onondaga County Department of Water Environment Protection and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Improvements to the wastewater handling infrastructure began well before the RTF was built. Onondaga County constructed a large diameter overflow and drainage pipe through the Regional Market and Regional Transportation Center north of Hiawatha Boulevard.

Several interceptor sewers and connections were also installed including a new stormwater discharge pipe and a new 30-inch interceptor sewer on Hiawatha Boulevard. Additionally, the foul sewer force main that this area uses was connected to the Ley Creek force main.

The RTF includes one swirl concentrator. It also is capable of storing and disinfecting wastewater.

The facility now removes many solids and floating debris from the sanitary sewage.
