Intercepting debris at Maltbie Street

Completed May 1999
Intercepting debris at Maltbie Street

Onondaga Creek has been the receiving stream for many of the overflows of Syracuse's sewers. As such, it has received a large volume of trash and floating debris.

A grit chamber at the corner of Maltbie and Evans streets in Syracuse was altered, and three in-line netting devices (net bags) were added to make it capable of removing floating material from the sewer overflows in this area. Construction included installation of a new driveway, curbing, stairs for maintenance access, and installation of a jib crane for removal of the net bags.

The Maltbie location was the first floatables control facility (FCF) that Onondaga County constructed under the Amended Consent Judgment. Detailed records of the facility's operation helped the County to plan later FCFs.
