Catching debris at Franklin Street
Two of the County's major sewers meet near Franklin
and Butternut streets in the northern part of downtown
Syracuse. The floating debris in these sewers had
been reaching Onondaga Creek.
Onondaga County built two large underground chambers (one on
the Butternut Trunk Sewer and one on the Burnet Avenue
Trunk Sewer) with netting devices to capture the
floatables.
In addition, two above-ground structures were built to
house the electrical equipment and enclose the net bag
operation on the sewer lines.
Construction began in the summer of 1999 and was
completed in May 2000. The $4.7 million Franklin
Street Floatables Control Facility is the largest facility of
its kind that Onondaga will build.
Besides the important water quality benefits of this project,
Onondaga County improved parking lots and landscaped the
area. It is the County's goal to leave a construction
site in better condition after a facility is in place
than when the construction started.
