by Brown and Caldwell and EcoLogic for Onondaga County Dept of Water Environment Protection
6. Community and public participation
Since fall 2000, County staff and design engineers
have made contact and held meetings with groups and
individuals in the area. These meetings range from
large public meetings to small group informal talks.
To date, the following groups have been targeted for
information exchanges on project status and community
needs:
- Tomorrow's Neighborhoods Today (TNT)-Sector 2-Westside
- Westside CSO Advisory Committee
- Neighborhood Watch Groups
- Principals and staff from area schools
- Parent-Teacher Organizations
- Churches in the area
- Neighborhood associations
- Knights of Columbus
- Director and staff Rosamond Gifford Zoo
- Catholic Charities
- Community Centers and organizations
- Residents of Senior Living apartments
- Organizations and businesses in State-owned Syracuse Developmental Center Facilities
- Owners of businesses in the project area
- Private property owners along conveyance routes and facility sites
In addition to public meetings, County staff released
a series of publications, newsletters, and
advertisements intended to disseminate information and
solicit feedback. The draft "Facilities Plan" was
posted on the County's web site along with other
project-related information.
With completion of the Facilities Plan, which provides
the data on the CSO abatement needs and proposes
possible alternative solutions, the County will expand
its public participation activities to solicit and
receive further input from the community. Public
participation activities will include working with the
advisory committee, direct mailings to area residents,
holding availability sessions in the neighborhoods
near Harbor Brook, presentations to local groups and
organizations, public information meetings and other
activities.
