The goal of the Eat Well Play Hard initiative is to prevent childhood obesity and chronic disease
risk through policy, system, and environmental supports. Interventions are based on increasing
developmentally appropriate physical activity, increasing the daily consumption of low fat milk and
low fat dairy products, and increasing the daily consumption of fruits and vegetables. Interventions
are conducted in childcare centers, after school programs, daycare settings, WIC, emergency food
programs, youth centers and other community-based agencies.

The goal of this program is to reduce the incidence of heart disease by promoting healthy
eating and physical activity through policy and environmental changes in schools. As part of the
Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004, all schools receiving federal funding for
their lunch programs will be required to develop a wellness policy that addresses nutrition and
physical activity. These policies need to be in place and ready for implementation on the first day of
the 2006-2007 school year. Staff provide assistance to schools in the development of their
comprehensive wellness policy. Assistance includes the following:
- Information on the law, how to form a wellness team, selection of wellness
policies, etc.
- Training on how to complete the School Health Index assessment and develop a school-
based Implementation Plan.
- Assistance in both the planning and implementation phases of selected wellness
policies.
