DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for erecting, installing and maintaining overhead and underground electric power distribution lines. An employee in this class is required to climb poles and trees and to be able to work effectively at considerable heights in adverse weather conditions. Rigid observance of safety precautions to prevent personal injury is mandatory. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Line Leader or Electric Light & Water Superintendent and inspected while in progress and upon completion. Supervision may be exercised over Line Worker Helpers or Laborers. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Digs holes, sets and guys poles for electric power distribution wires.
Strings electric power lines on poles and through underground conduits.
Installs crossarms and erects transformers on power poles and pads.
Repairs storm-damaged electric distribution lines.
Installs 10 and 30 metering equipment and maintains same.
Trims and prunes trees in the path of distribution lines.
Operates automotive and hydraulic equipment such as winch booms, line trucks, buckets and digger derricks.
Installs and maintains underground and overhead street lighting fixtures.
Installs and maintains service line to all customers (residential or commercial).
Installs all equipment pertinent to operation of distribution system.
Observes and maintains safety procedures.
May perform maintenance work connected with other municipal public works activities when not working as a Line Worker.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of theory and principles of electricity and electrical distribution systems.
Good knowledge of standard safety measures and devices in handling high voltage electrical conduits.
Ability to use tools and equipment of the trade.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to climb poles and towers.
Ability to splice wires and cables.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Two (2) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, as a driver-groundperson, lineworker trainee, or apprentice electrician on power
distribution systems. SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT
When required to operate motor vehicles, employees must possess a valid non-CDL or CDL with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle(s) being operated.
