ASPHALT RECYCLING PLANT OPERATOR
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for controlling the production of hot asphalt paving mixes in an asphalt recycling drum mix plant by operating a computerized control system. The production process is seasonal. The Operator assists in snow removal operations when weather halts asphalt production. Supervisory duties of an employee in this class are limited to that of a crew leader in capacity and only in limited situations.
Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Operates computer system to control production of recycled and/or virgin asphalt mixes.
Inputs data into the computer, including numerical mix designs, percentages of mix components and moisture contents.
Monitors computer console print-outs detailing temperature, flow rates and production rates and makes adjustments as indicated by control system.
Manually adjusts conveyor tracking and scraper tensioning devices to adjust flow rates when needed.
Adjusts mix designs as directed.
Operates a separate computerized load ticket printing system and generates daily and monthly production reports.
Monitors quantities of aggregates and asphalt cements and places orders for raw materials from approved vendors.
When not producing asphalt due to seasonal weather patterns:
Assists in snow removal operations.
FUIL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of the physical properties of asphalt paving mixes.
Working knowledge of the asphalt mix production process as well as the particulars of a recycling drum mix process.
Working knowledge of construction materials, especially aggregates and asphalt.
Mechanical aptitude and a knowledge of mechanical components.
Ability to read, understand, and manipulate motor controls.
Ability to lead in, schedule and participate in street repair and snow removal activities assigned seasonally.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Three (3) seasons of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in either the production of asphalt
or in laying asphalt to resurface streets or roads.
