WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT SUPERINTENDENT
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for the operation and maintenance and repair of wastewater treatment plants, biosolids dewatering facilities and contributing pumping stations. An employee in this class exercises considerable independent judgement and initiative with consideration for conforming to standard procedures. Supervision is exercised over a number of technical and professional subordinates. General supervision is received from an administrative superior. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Supervises and assigns wastewater treatment plant personnel in the operation, maintenance and repair of a variety of equipment, including pumping equipment, grit chambers, mechanically operated bar screens, compressors, settling tanks with collectors, aeration tanks, electrical, heating systems, digesters, gas holders, chlorination equipment, ultraviolet disinfection, odor control systems and biosolids treatment equipment.
Prepares plant and personnel records and operational reports, work and vacation schedules.
Prepares complete information data for requisitioning of replacement parts for all equipment and checks said parts upon delivery.
Maintains adequate stock of replacement parts, tools and supplies.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Comprehensive knowledge of the practices and equipment used in the operation and maintenance of Grade 4 municipal wastewater treatment plant and contributing pumping stations.
Thorough knowledge of the principles of sanitary engineering as they relate to the operation of a modern wastewater treatment plant.
Thorough knowledge of the principles and applications of physics, chemistry and bacteriology as applied to wastewater treatment and disposal.
Ability to supervise the operation and repair of pumps, valves and related mechanical and electrical equipment.
Ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates.
Two (2) years of permanent competitive class status as a Head Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator.
Possession of a 4A certificate issued under the provisions of part 650 of the New York State Environmental Conservation Regulations and three (3) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, which must have been in a supervisory capacity involving the actual operation of a wastewater treatment plant including both maintenance and operation.
SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT
When required to operate a motor vehicle, possession of a valid New York State CDL or Non-CDL, including any special endorsements, as required for the type of vehicle being operated.
