WATER CONTROL CENTER ATTENDANT
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for monitoring the condition of the water system through the control center of the City of Syracuse Water Department. An employee in this class receives and transmits information by using communication equipment. Employees in this class must react quickly and accurately to any dangerous fluctuations in the system and make the necessary corrections within the plant or remotely. Assignments are received orally and in writing through written procedures and guidelines. Direct supervision is received by the Superintendent of Water Maintenance and Assistant Superintendents of Water Maintenance. General supervision is received by the Water Engineering section. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Monitors all equipment and alarms in the control center.
Reports failures, damage or misuse of equipment or alarms to superiors.
Operates the control center phone system.
Answers inquiries and records information or directs call to the appropriate section of the department.
Reads and records, as directed, data from the water system monitoring equipment.
Operates equipment at the plant or remotely in order to make necessary changes to the water system.
Reports indications of major system problems and subsequent actions taken to superiors.
Alerts appropriate personnel as directed by the Duty Chief.
Relays information such as location and possible problem to appropriate staff.
Transmits messages and orders by radio, phone or computer between the various units working in the field.
Monitors radio and assists and corrects communication as necessary.
Researches the different file systems for information and relays it to other employees.
Records new or corrected information into computers and file cards.
Sends new information to IT department for input.
Notifies appropriate department personnel to investigate reports of main leaks, breaks or other problems.
Notifies U.F.P.O. Dig Safe of departmentís intended excavations and follows procedures as required by law.
Maintains daily logs, on-call personnel list and other information systems.
Monitors security system and notifies proper authorities of problems.
Receives deliveries when necessary.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of water operations, personnel, equipment and location of facilities.
Good knowledge of the geography of the local road network.
Ability to communicate directions to others.
Ability to read and write.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to transmit messages with good direction and a clear speaking voice.
Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.
Ability to interpret maps and computer graphics.
Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with the general public, vendors and employees.
Ability to maintain a variety of simple listings of procedures and activities.
A) One (1) year of full-time work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in the operation and/or maintenance of a municipal water or wastewater system; or,
B) One (1) year of full-time work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in dispatching work crews or emergency personnel; or,
C) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associates degree in Electronic Media Communications, Computer Science or a closely related field; or,
D) Two (2) years of full-time work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in the operation and/or maintenance of computers.
