SUPERVISOR OF SECURITY
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for overseeing and supervising the security department of a public library. The primary emphasis of this position is to insure the presence of security guards to deter vandalism, breakage, theft, and unwarranted loitering on library property, as well as to insure the safety of library patrons and employees. Under the supervision of the Library Director or other administrative superior, the incumbent has responsibility for planning and overseeing the work of security guards in the library. This position is also responsible for the maintenance and review of surveillance and security equipment, and the badge system. Direct supervision is exercised over the work of security staff. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Develops, coordinates, oversees, and evaluates security measures and manages all aspects of the security department.
Monitors and oversees building and grounds security; identifies and communicates potential threats and safety issues.
Responds to alarms and distress calls.
Investigates incidents and/or customer complaints
Conducts facility security checks, patrols grounds and buildings, checks locks, windows and doors; requests repairs when necessary.
Meets regularly with library management and coordinators to keep them informed of and to identify security issues and any present or future building and grounds security needs.
Gives directions or answers patron questions.
Participates as an active member of the Safety Committee.
Supervises building security guards; plans, assigns and directs work; conducts performance evaluations of security staff.
Responsible for guard scheduling, manages time off requests, and arranges for substitute guard staff as needed.
Trains security team.
Presents security and safety workshops to staff.
Maintains badge system.
Ensures compliance with library policies and procedures; reviews and makes recommendations as related to building and grounds security and safety.
Ensures maintenance of security equipment, reviews and makes recommendations.
Maintains records and files on rounds, training, injury and incident reports; reviews reports for completeness, follow-up and recommendations.
Responsible for surveillance equipment - reviews and makes recommendations.

Good knowledge of the practices and procedures necessary to maintain order and insure the protection of life and security of buildings, grounds and equipment.
Good knowledge of safety procedures necessary to eliminate or prevent accidents and safety hazards.
Good knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision;
Good knowledge of computer applications for office operations including word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail and calendars.
Good knowledge of computerized security systems/surveillance equipment.
Working knowledge of the functions, goals and programs of the library.

Candidates must be high school graduates or holders of a high school equivalency* diploma, have 2 years of full-time paid work experience as a security guard, peace officer, or police officer, and must have 2 years of full-time supervisory work experience.
*A high school equivalency diploma issued by an education department of any of the states of the United States or holders of a comparable diploma issued by any territory commonwealth, or possession of the United States or by the Canal Zone or holders of a report from the United States Armed Forces certifying successful completion of the tests related to general education development, high school level at time of application.
SPECIAL NECESSERY REQUIREMENTS AT TIME OF APPOINTMENT:
A) Pursuant to Chapter 336 of the Laws of 1992, employees whose principle responsibility is to perform security guard duties, must be registered with the New York State Department of State and complete a pre-assignment training program. Employees must complete the registration and training prior to performing the duties of the position. Guards also must complete an 8-Hour Annual In-service Training Course for Security Guards every year.
B) Possession of New York State Driverís License. Valid licensure must be maintained throughout employment.
ADDITIONAL SPECIAL NECESSERY REQUIREMENT:
Certification in Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED (American Red Cross) or current First Responder Certification (New York State) must be obtained during the probationary period. Current certification must then be maintained throughout employment.
