CASE SUPERVISOR GRADE A
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for planning and supervising the work performed by the social services staff and for coordinating the work of the various units of the agency. General supervision is exercised over Grade B Supervisors who supervise casework staff, paraprofessional and clerical staff depending on the area of assignment. The Case Supervisor Grade A recommends casework and group work policies and procedures for the agency and is responsible for standards of social services in accordance with agency policy. Certain assignments made to employees in this class will require reasonable access to transportation to meet field work requirements made in the ordinary course of business in a timely and efficient manner. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Establishes casework methods and determines standards and practices.
Supervises social services staff in administering and rendering services.
Interprets Federal, State and local policies and programs.
Maintains cooperative relationships with other units and sections of the agency through administrative channels.
Evaluates staff performance.
Participates in social work research projects.
Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with other human service agencies, family court and other courts, law enforcement, NYS Department of Social Services, educational institutions and medical providers, including but not limited to hospitals, nursing homes and home care providers.
Responsible for the collection, interpretation and analysis of data.
Directs the preparation of reports.
Interprets agency programs for child welfare services and adult protective services to the community through contacts with citizen and other groups, conducting public presentations and educational sessions.
Responsible for authorizing and monitoring services and expenditures. Develops training programs for staff development.
Identify and minimize factors that affect worker safety and stress.
Utilizes automated systems to manage all direct and contract Child Welfare and Adult and Family Services.
Facilitates regular meetings with assigned staff.

Comprehensive knowledge of modern principles and practices of social casework, case management and group work, and ability to apply these in the performance of their duties.
Comprehensive knowledge of community resources.
Thorough knowledge of Federal, State and local public welfare laws and programs.
Thorough knowledge of management principles and techniques and the ability to apply them in the performance of duties.
Thorough knowledge of child welfare laws, policies and procedures, child development, family systems and risk assessment.
Thorough knowledge of psychosocial assessment techniques including safety and risk assessments.
Thorough knowledge of the aging process, the effect aging has on the individual and family relationships, and how this process affects the individual's willingness to accept help.
Knowledge of techniques of preparing social reports and of case recordings.
Knowledge of crisis intervention and mediation techniques.
Ability to plan and direct the work of others.
Ability to supervise employees and work groups.
Ability to prepare clear and accurate records and reports.
Ability to establish and maintain successful relationships with people.
Ability to interpret the work of the agency.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Two (2) years of permanent competitive class status in the title of Case Supervisor Grade B; or,
Four (4) years of permanent competitive class status in the title of Senior Caseworker
Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a baccalaureate degree and six (6) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in social work with a public or private agency adhering to acceptable standards, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
Successful completion of graduate semester hours in social work from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees may be substituted for work experience as follows: thirty (30) graduate semester hours is equivalent to one (1) year of work experience and sixty (60) graduate hours is equivalent to two (2) years of work experience.
