Forensic Scientist (Forensic Biology/DNA) I, II, or III
The Onondaga County Center for Forensic Sciences is seeking to fill a full-time Forensic Scientist I, II, or III position. The level to which the position will be filled will be dependent on the qualifications of the individual hired. The Center for Forensic Sciences is a full-service ASCLD/LAB-International accredited forensic laboratory outfitted with state of the art equipment and technology. The Forensic Laboratories provide high quality scientific laboratory services in support of the administration of justice and public safety programs for the citizens of Onondaga and surrounding counties. Onondaga County is located in the heart of the Finger Lakes region in upstate NY. The laboratory is located in city of Syracuse, within a five-hour drive from New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Toronto and Montreal.
The work involves responsibility for collecting evidence, performing scientific testing and analyses of unknown biological substances/DNA and evidentiary material required in criminal investigations, preparation and presentation of findings in notes and written reports, serving as an expert witness in court, performing technical review of casework and performing quality control and quality assurance related tasks. All work is performed in accordance with Federal and State accreditation requirements and departmental procedure manuals and guidelines.
Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees within the last ten (10) years with a Bachelorís Degree or higher in a natural science, forensic science, criminalistics or a closely related field which must include or be supplemented by a minimum of nine (9) semester or equivalent hours of coursework (graduate/undergraduate) covering the following subject areas: biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology, or other subjects which provide a basic understanding of the foundation of forensic DNA analysis, coursework covering statistics and/or population genetics and,
- At least 100 hours of forensic science internship experience in a crime laboratory or employment in a technical position in a Forensic Laboratory for six months within the last five years for the Forensic Scientist I position or
- Two (2) years of full-time paid work experience, or its part-time equivalent, performing work equivalent to a Forensic Scientist (Biology) for the Forensic Scientist II position or
- Five (5) years of full-time paid work experience, or its part-time equivalent, performing work equivalent to a Forensic Scientist (Biology) for the Forensic Scientist III position
NOTE: Education may be substituted for experience as follows: A Masterís Degree or a Doctorate Degree (Ph.D.) in a natural science, forensic science, criminalistics or a closely related field can be substituted for one (1) year of the required work experience for the Forensic Scientist III position.
Candidates considered for appointment will be required to undergo a State and national criminal history background investigation which will include a fingerprint check to determine suitability for appointment. Failure to meet the standards for the background investigation may result in disqualification.
