The Onondaga County Department of Transportation is currently accepting applications for the position of:
Civil Engineer / Land Surveyor
Location: 421 Montgomery Street, 11th Floor, Syracuse, NY
Hours of work: 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
The work involves responsibility for performing civil engineering work in the investigation, design and construction of public works projects and for supervising and participating in land surveys. An employee in this class is responsible for directing and participating in survey and mapping projects and for performing assignments requiring the application of engineering skills and knowledge to civil engineering projects related to the design, construction, inspection or maintenance of public works.
A) Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State
Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Baccalaureate Degree in Civil Engineering and three (3) years of *professional level work experience, or its part time equivalent, in civil engineering which must have included experience in land surveying; or,
B) Seven (7) years of **paraprofessional or *professional level experience, or its part time equivalent, in civil
engineering, three (3) years of which must have been *professional level experience in civil engineering which must have included experience in land surveying; or,
C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
* Professional level work experience requires specialized and theoretical knowledge. The experience involves independence of action and personal responsibility for actions.
** Paraprofessional level work experience involves the performance of non-interpretive, routine and non-technical duties in a supportive role to a professional.
SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT:
Possession of a license in land surveying from the New York State Department of Education.
Candidate will initially be provisional and must take the corresponding Civil Service exam, scheduled at a later date, and place high enough on the list to qualify for appointment.
