Our Correction Officers are selected from the Civil Service eligible list that is established from the Correction Officer/Deputy Sheriff (Custody) examination which is generally given in April each year.  In addition to an interview before a panel of administrators from the Dept. of Correction, our screening process for new Correction Officers includes a physical fitness evaluation(*), criminal history records check, polygraph examination and drug test.  Once an offer of employment is accepted, a pre-employment physical will be scheduled.

New Officers will attend a ten to twelve-week Basic Correctional Law Enforcement Academy with training in areas such as Correction Law, Penal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, Firearms, Defensive Tactics, Physical Training and Aerosol Subject Restraint.  Following graduation from the Academy, Trainees will be assigned to a four-week Field Training Officer program before being independently assigned.

More information is available on our Correction Officer Fact Sheet, available at this link.

(*) - Our Physical fitness evaluation includes push-ups, sit-ups and a mile-and-a-half run.  Candidates are measured against he Cooper Standards.  The Cooper Institute is a widely recognized authority on fitness research and education.  More information on the Cooper Institute can be found at: http://www.cooperinstitute.org/about/
